Before the patio cushions go into storage, take ten minutes for this. Spring setup goes a lot faster when nothing comes out of the bin smelling like mildew.
1. Check the tag first
Care depends on three things: the fabric, the foam inside, and whether the cover comes off. The care tag or the manufacturer's guide is the rule to follow. Everything below is general.
2. Brush off dirt and debris
This is the step most people skip. Sunbrella's care guide notes that mildew can grow on dirt and other material left on the fabric, even when the fabric itself resists it. A soft brush and a dry afternoon do most of the work.
3. Clean per the label, then air dry all the way through
Spot-clean or wash the way the label says. Then let the cushions dry completely, including the foam. A cover can feel dry while the inside is still damp.
4. Store dry and off the ground
Pick a dry spot (a garage shelf, a closet, a deck box that stays dry) and keep the cushions off a concrete floor. Avoid sealing anything that's even slightly damp in airtight plastic.
5. Label it for spring
Label cushions by chair or by set. When the weather turns, setup takes minutes instead of a matching puzzle.
